A mother suspected of murdering her young daughter last night remained in a critical condition in hospital – although police say her condition has slightly improved.
Detectives are still waiting to question the woman about what happened a week ago today when she and her 22-month-old daughter were found in the garden of a home in Marshfields, Bradford, by a window cleaner.
Amrita Kaur suffered fatal injuries when she plunged from an upstairs window at the terraced house in Delamere Street. She had been taken to hospital with serious injuries but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
The 36-year-old mother is understood to have fallen from the window soon after the girl. Police have not given details of her injuries but yesterday said she was still critical, though slightly improved.
The woman, who has not been named, and child were found lying on the ground at the back of the house at 9.15am on Tuesday.
Neighbours spoke of their shock following the incident and the distress of the man who found the pair and called police.
Fozia Kouser, 21, who lives across the road, said: “He was banging on our door asking us what our postcode was. He said he had to get it for the police.
“We were watching it all from the upstairs window. There were two ambulances. We saw a paramedic bring the child out to the ambulance in his arms.”
It is thought Amrita’s father lives in the south of England and that the mother and daughter had only moved to Bradford about two months ago.
The day after the incident police announced they had started a murder investigation and confirmed the child died from injuries consistent with a fall and her mother had been arrested on suspicion of her murder.
Detective Chief Inspector Jon Morgan, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident, but are appealing for anyone with information to contact the police on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
