Bradford’s dog owners are being asked to keep their pets on a lead when walking near sheep as the lambing season gets under way.

The British Veterinary Association has reported a rise in the number of dog attacks in recent years, the results of which often lead to lambs being lost and sheep being killed and injured.

Association president Robin Hargreaves said while it is good practice for owners to keep dogs on leads at all times when walking near livestock, it is particularly important during the spring.

“Even dogs who are usually calm and good natured can become very excitable and difficult to control when faced with livestock,” he said.

“Owners should consider taking alternative routes during the lambing season to avoid causing distress.”
