The leader of Labour-run Bradford Council warned last night that although some high profile services have been spared from cuts ahead of today’s crucial budget-setting meeting, the pain would be felt elsewhere.
Coun David Green said services like children’s centres and some public toilets would get a reprieve in the 2014/15 spending plans but it was at the expense of jobs in management and back office roles which left the authority in a weaker position as up to 650 posts are set to be lost over two years.
Extra funding for PCSOs and children’s centres has been found since the initial budget proposals were produced last November, but Coun Green said: “It is going to get harder and harder in future years to find a few million pounds to keep things going.
“We have some massive cuts coming up, that’s why we are having to put Council Tax up.”
If Labour’s proposed budget is approved it will see a Council Tax increase of 1.6 per cent.
The Council’s budget meeting starts at City Hall at 4pm.
