A much-loved stalwart of a Shipley church was the special guest at a farewell birthday party organised in her honour.

Retired primary school teacher Doris Scott, known affectionately to many as Auntie Doris, recently moved away from Shipley to live with her family, but returned for the event to celebrate her 90th birthday, at St Peter’s Church.

Mrs Scott, who was brought up in Darlington, served in the WAAF during the Second World War after which she married Stan, whom she had known for many years.

They had two daughters and in 1964 moved to Shipley where Mrs Scott became a teacher at Crossflatts Infant School.

The family became members of St Peter’s where Mrs Scott was a youth club leader and a keen member of the Missionary Support Group.

Mrs Scott always enjoyed the social side of life at St Peter’s, said church friend Angus McNab.

“Many think of Doris as the embodiment of energy and joy. Her winning smile and warmth always light up a room and will keep her in our thoughts for a long time to come,” he said.
