Bad weather did not put off hundreds of enthusiasts who descended on Saltaire on Saturday for the village’s long-running potato day.
Held at Exhibition Hall, the event saw 50 varieties of potatoes for sale, almost all of which were organic, as well as talks about the history of the humble vegetable from potato expert Alan Romans, and seed swaps.
There were crates of potatoes, many of which are hardly ever found in stores, so crowds flooded into the hall when the doors opened at 10am.
Organised by the West Yorkshire Organic Group, and held in association with Shipley College, the event has been held in the village since 1998 and helps raise money for the group and other organic groups.
John Dallas, one of the organisers, said: “We normally get between 600 and 850 people turning up. Everyone here has come to get some seed potatoes.
“The hall was built to illuminate exhibitions, so it is the perfect venue for an event like this.
“Today we have just under 50 different varieties.”
