The roads around part of the University of Bradford could be transformed with one-way systems, double yellow lines and limited parking schemes in a bid to attract more businesses to the area.
Bradford Council has proposed a number of traffic management measures for Listerhills Road, Thornton Road and the surrounding roads to prevent “notorious” parking problems put businesses off from investing in the area.
At that side of the campus, new buildings stand within a few feet of derelict shells and empty scrubland, and the Council believes better traffic management will aid regeneration.
In response to the plan, Bradford Chamber of Commerce agreed on-street parking needed to be better monitored, but it warned that some people in the area could “have their nose put out of joint” by the new system.
If approved, the changes will see double yellow lines at junctions in the area, no waiting times between 8am and 6pm on Mondays to Saturdays in certain areas, two hour parking limits at other stretches of road and a one way system on Richmond Road, Hey Street and an area of Longside Lane as well as the smaller roads Monk Street and Blythe Street.
The works will cost £20,000, which will be paid for from “section 106 money” provided to the Council by local developers to offset the extra traffic from recent builds.
The proposals are being discussed by the Bradford West Area Committee on Wednesday.
Mike Cartwright, policy and representation executive for Bradford Chamber, said: “Parking in the area has been notoriously difficult for quite some time and, as has been noted, there has been significant change and development there in recent years.
“In an ideal world, we’d all be able to park precisely where we choose, but on-street parking does need to be managed and closely monitored.”
The meeting takes place in Bradford City Hall at 6pm.
