Ilkley Film Festival starts its second day today with a “gem” of Japanese cinema.

Following on from yesterday’s packed opening night – which included Paul Merton’s Silent Clowns – Harakiri is on at Ilkley Playhouse, on Weston Road, at 11am.

Described by festival organisers as a gem, Harakiri is regarded as an influential and classic film.

At the same time, at King’s Hall on Station Road, Ilkley classic A Private Function will be shown. Director Malcolm Mowbray, as well as cast and crew, will be on hand for a discussion about the film.

Festival organiser Martin Pilkington said: “I really wanted to bring exciting and interesting films to Ilkley and to perhaps help to inspire a new generation into film or to highlight the talent we already have within the region.

“We're really proud of this year's programme and hope the inclusion of documentaries, local features, foreign cinema and previews will ensure there is something for everyone.”

Today’s line-up continues with Plot for Peace, a South African film being screened at King’s Hall, and Scandinavian tale We Are the Best! at the Playhouse, both at 2pm.

At 4.30pm there is a Mark Herman Directing Masterclass at the Playhouse. Mark has been responsible for films such as Brassed Off and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. An hour-long Q&A session will be followed by a screening of one of Mark’s films.

From the Sea to the Land Beyond, with live accompaniment by British Sea Power, is on at 6pm at King's Hall, while at 8pm at the Playhouse is Lad: A Yorkshire Story.

Tomorrow starts with Ilkley Through the Ages (Yorkshire Film Archive) at King’s Hall at 11am, before The Ear - 25th Anniversary Special at the Playhouse at noon.

Tim’s Vermeer, followed by a Q&A, is at King’s Hall at 1pm. The film was directed by Teller, one half of famous magic act Penn and Teller.

At 2.30pm at the Playhouse is football film Believe, before King’s Hall plays host to The Armstrong Lie – about disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong – at 3.30pm.

The Rocket is on at the Playhouse at 5pm, and The Sea is at King’s Hall at 6pm.

Otley-born director Clio Barnard’s The Selfish Giant is on from 8pm at the Playhouse, with Metropolis with Live Accompaniment at King’s Hall from 8.15pm.
