Promises that the resurrection of Bradford’s Broadway would immediately bring new jobs for local people are being fulfilled, say council bosses.

One of the early economic dividends agreed with developer Westfield was a boost in local employment.

And while some specialised contractors have come in from outside the district, much of the work is being done by Bradford firms.

Mike Cowlam, the Council’s assistant director for regeneration and culture, said: “We have a Local Employment Delivery Plan agreed with Westfield for the construction phase of the development and there will be a further plan for retail.

“We can confirm that the Local Employment Delivery Plan was a requirement of the agreement with Westfield and we believe 75 new jobs will be created for the construction phase and are targeting local people for 50 of these jobs.

“The groundworks sub-contractor currently on site is Moortown, part of the Moortown group based on the Euroway Industrial estate in Bradford.”

Mr Cowlam said it was anticipated that an Apprenticeship Training Agency set up last year would supply approximately 15 apprentices to the project.

“We will be working with Westfield and JobCentre Plus to achieve these targets and the Council is leading on recruitment for the construction jobs.

“We have created an e-mail address for people to register their interest in jobs at Westfield which is westfield.recruitment@bradford.gov.uk.

“People can send their CV, work experience details and contact numbers to this e-mail address.”

Posters have also been put up on the hoardings surrounding the site to highlight how those without access to e-mail can express their interest.

Susan Hinchcliffe, Bradford Council’s executive member for employment, skills and culture said she was delighted by the arrival of fresh work chances.

She said: “I’m pleased that the Westfield development is already starting to bring economic opportunities and, importantly, jobs to Bradford.”

The construction stage of the shopping centre is expected to create about 1,500 jobs followed by about 2,500 retails jobs when it is in operation.
