A major project to honour men and women of the armed forces is all set to take a bow in Bradford.
Children have played a big part in making the special exhibition a reality. But there is still time for people to contribute memorabilia and information.
The project is the work of the Inspired Neighbourhoods CIC community organisation. The Inspired and Proud exhibition will feature items to honour those who have fought in conflicts around the world.
A display will showcase artwork by schoolchildren, working from memorabilia of loved ones and talks by veterans and those still in the forces.
CIC chief executive Nasim Qureshi said the idea is to explore the stories of veterans of both world wars and recent or current conflicts.
“We are working with schools and communities to collect views, ideas, pictures and artefacts to add what is already in place,” he said.
“This is a story of those experiences and how they impacted on armed service personnel and society as a whole. We want to see what we can learn from them.”
The project has been running for a year and its culmination next month is designed to coincide with the centenary of the First World War.
“Our display will show respect to those who served and, in some cases, gave their lives,” said Mr Qureshi. “We want to show we appreciate their courage and contribution to the safe country we live in today.”
Mr Qureshi said response to the project had been excellent from across Bradford. “We have even been asked to continue and look at linking in with the curriculum at some schools,” he said. “We are investigating funding for us to do that.”
It is open at City Park Pavilion from March 1 with a formal opening on March 8. After that, a programme of events will include school visits and talks from forces’ veterans.
Anyone who wants to contribute should contact Inspired Neighbourhoods at The Thornbury Centre in Leeds Old Road on (01274) 665598.
