Pubs and brewing contribute more than £107m a year to the Bradford economy and provide 5,200 jobs, a new nationwide survey reveals.
Findings for the British Beer & Pub Association, broken down into local authority areas across the UK, have been unveiled to highlight the economic impact of the trade.
The Oxford Economics survey also shows that in the Bradford Council area there are 13 breweries and 383 pubs. The sector pays about £88m in wages and generated £4.6m in capital expenditure.
Local pubs and brewing also make a major contributon to government and council coffers through corporation tax, income tax and National Insurance, VAT and excise duties, along with business rates, totalling £62.1m according to the survey.
Nationally, the BBPA says 900,000 jobs depend on British beer and pubs – and 44 per cent of employees are younger workers aged between 16 and 24. It is calling on Chancellor George Osborne to freeze beer duty in his next Budget to help protect jobs in the industry .
Brigid Simmonds, BBPA chief executive, said: “Beer and pubs provide huge numbers of local jobs, especially for young people. Last year’s duty cut made a real difference, saving jobs across the country, boosting investment and increasing confidence. Yet, so much of this good work will be undone if beer duty rises again.
“We need a duty freeze in the Budget, and I hope all MPs will make the case for beer, pubs and jobs, and support Early Day Motion 892 in Parliament.”
The motion urges the Government to support the growth of Britain’s breweries and underpin confidence in the UK’s pubs; by considering a further freeze in beer duty to secure more than 2,000 jobs in pubs across the country as well as reducing the cost of living.
William Wagstaff, landlord at Bradford’s Jacobs Well pub where at least three of the staff are aged under 24, said: “We are going to support the motion for a freeze, and obviously go along with what is being said that the economy does benefit from people drinking in pubs.”
Greg Mulholland, Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West and chairman of the Parliamentary Save the Pub group, said: “It is important to note the huge contribution that pubs and brewing make to the economy in the UK and locally. It is also fantastic that we now have more than 1,000 breweries in the UK, with West Yorkshire having more than any other county.
"Yet while drinkers have more choice and better beer than ever before, we are losing pubs every week which as well as being the best place to enjoy beer are part of the heritage of the nation and important hubs for their communities.
“Too many publicans are being ripped off which is why we need the Government to listen to the organisations who support Fair Deal for Your Local campaign and allow many more pubs to survive and thrive".
