Talented students at a Baildon school have taken second place in the regional finals of an international racing car design competition.

At the ‘F1 in Schools’ regional finals, two teams from Titus Salt School came away with outstanding results having built and then raced their scale model vehicles at the event which took place at TATA Steel in Scunthorpe.

Salts’ Team TITAN secured sponsorship from Ford, and the other team – Element 6 – was backed by Denso and other businesses, which provided financial aid as well as professional experience.

And their success now takes them through to the national finals held in March at the Big Bang Fair, Birmingham.

If their winning streak continues the young engineers could end up at the world final in Abu Dhabi, which would be a trip of a lifetime.

F1 in Schools challenged students to create their own Formula One team.

They designed, manufactured, tested and raced what they hoped would be the fastest Formula One car of the future; a 1:12 scale model designed using 3D solid modelling software and machined from a block of balsa wood; incorporating 3D print technology in its front and rear wings.

Kieran Nar, team leader of Element 6, said the F1 challenge had ben and inspiring experience and said: “Being part of the competition has taught our team the fundamental skills required to become a successful engineer.”

Ali Javed, who led winning team TITAN, added: “We’ve learned a lot about ourselves during this competition and we now feel confident when competing among the best.”
