A boy who saved his mum from choking to death on a pea has been shortlisted for a St John Ambulance national first aid award.

Nine-year-old Kayne Holden, of Bingley will be one of five youngsters at the charity’s Everyday Heroes London ceremony on Wednesday, March 26.

And they will each be hoping to win an award at an event hosted by TV presenter Tess Daly with winners chosen by popular vote.

Calm Kayne saved his mum’s life when she began choking on a pea, was unable to breath and knelt down on the floor so he could help.

Having learnt first aid on a West Yorkshire Police course days before, Kayne knew how to give his mother back blows and an abdominal thrust that cleared her airway.

Cherie Briggs, 38, said: “Obviously Kayne is my hero. I’m so proud because he listened, watched, learned and put it into action. He didn’t panic, he just got on with it and I’m very lucky.”

Kayne Holden used the manoeuvre to stop his mother, Cherie, from choking a day after he was taught the skill at the West Yorkshire Police Summer Camp in Bradford last year.

His actions have seen him nominated for the Guy Evans Young Hero of the Year Award, one of the St John Ambulance Everyday Heroes awards.

Cherie said: “Kayne’s really chuffed to have been nominated for this award and we’re so pleased for him.

"I'm also very grateful to the police and Bradford College for organising the summer camp, and for giving Kayne a skill that he was able to remember.”

Summer camp organiser PCSO Chris Cahill, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “Kayne’s quick-thinking undoubtedly saved his mum’s life and we are thrilled to hear that he has been nominated for a national award. Kayne is representing young people in Bingley, so please vote for him.”

TV’s Tess Daly will host the Everyday Heroes Awards ceremony at the Lancaster London Hotel, joined by Dragon’s Den star Duncan Bannatyne, Coronation Street stars Michelle Keegan and Samia Ghadie, alongside TV’s Dr Dawn Harper and Matthew Wright to present the awards.
