Robin Cousins' ICE
The Alhambra
There is something slightly unsettling, but very exciting, about seeing skaters leaping, back-flipping and throwing each other around a stage just feet from where you’re sitting.
The Alhambra stage has been transformed into a shimmering ice rink for this stunning show, beautifully directed and choreographed by Olympic gold medalist and Dancing on Ice head judge Robin Cousins.
Starring some of the world’s greatest ice skaters, this was skating as you’ve never seen it before – with illusions, aerial gymnastics, breakdancing, even singing on ice.
Watching an ice show in a theatre is different to the arena experience because performance space is limited, adding to the thrill element.
Cousins’ slick choreography, set to a fabulous score blending finger-clickin’ catchy tunes with soul-stirringly haunting orchestrals, brought alive a variety of dance styles, including jazz, ballet, tap and contemporary.
Highlights included a sexy swing version of Lady Ga Ga’s Bad Romance, featuring a terrific performance from Brandee Malto, a high energy romp through The Bangles’ Walk Like An Egyptian, and Vaughn Chipeur’s witty routine to Blade Runner. Kate Endriulaitis drew gasps as she swung above the ice in a hoop, twisting her body into a bewildering array of shapes, and the ensemble delighted the audience with a high-kicking finale.
Along the way there were somersaults, cartwheels, dancing with swords, and daring ice moves such as the death spiral, throw twist, axel jumps and drape lift.
A breathtaking theatrical experience – classy, sassy, stylish and moving.
Runs until Sunday.
