SIR – I had thought the ludicrous (and Tory-inspired) nonsense that ‘Labour caused the financial crash’ was concluded . Apparently not. Mike Pollard (Letters, January 28) seems determined to tar the former Government as big spenders.
He will get few arguments from me – the last Government spent many, many billions on the public infrastructure. Of course after 20 years of Tory slash and burn, that is hardly a surprise.
He may wish to view the results (some of which have not actually been handed to profiteers or sacked yet). There were many new schools (I know of four within one square mile) colleges, hospitals, health centres, teachers, police, soldiers, sailors, airmen, medical staff, civil servants, public sector jobs. Those were the days eh?
Perhaps now Mr Pollard will explain – since the current Government has doubled the national debt in just three years, and borrowed more money than every government of the last 100 years – put together! Where on earth has all that (£700 billion that we know of) gone. Or can we guess?
