Work to stem odours from a Bradford waste site has been hailed “an outstanding success.”
The Environment Agency has pledged to continue to work with AWM after responding to hundreds of calls about the Canal Road site.
A spokesman for the company praised residents for making much of the improvement possible.
Tomorrow, a meeting of Bradford Council’s Environment and Waste Management Scrutiny Committee will hear how, since last April, the Agency received more than 500 reports of problems at locations across the district.
The report said most related to an impact on land and air, with a large percentage concerning AWM (Associated Waste Management) – a site which had been the focus of complaints about odours.
“This was a particularly busy time,” says a report. “But the regulation and incident response of AWM’s transfer station is one of our most outstanding successes. Since September we have not had substantiated odour from the facility.
“We will continue to regulate the site in a fair and consistent way and build on the relationship we have with residents.”
Coun Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council’s executive member for environment, said: “I am glad we have seen positive results from AWM. It is down to willingness on all sides to get it right. Hopefully we will now see a sustained improvement regarding problems residents have encountered in the past.”
Mike Robinson, PR and marketing manager for AWM, said: “The work we have done has been very successful, but much would not have been possible without the co-operation of our neighbours in surrounding areas.
“One of the major positives has been the community integration we have managed to champion. We have invested in projects such as a mums and toddlers group which meets weekly and a theatre group for adults with learning difficulties.
“There has been a strong corporate response to try to keep open this line of communication with residents, an area in which we needed to improve. We are also pleased with our work with the Environment Agency.
“Our systems are controlling odours effectively and it is good to know the work we do is having a benefit.”
Nicola Hoggart, environment management team leader at the Environment Agency, said: “We are pleased there has been a significant reduction in complaints about AWM’s waste facility.
“The site has seen significant odour problems which affected residents, but the situation has improved greatly.”
