Some of Kirklees Council’s art treasures should be sold off to fund frontline services, its Conservative group has said.
Conservative deputy leader, Councillor David Hall, said Kirklees Council owned more than £30m in art and other artefacts, some of which was so valuable that it could not be insured for public display.
Coun Hall said: “We own paintings by Lowry, Auerbach, Martin and Bacon, and a sculpture by Moore but no one gets to see them because they sit in our cellars. The public have no idea that we own them or what they are.”
