A £250 annual bonus set aside for Bradford Council’s lowest paid employees has sparked a political row.

The Conservative group has accused the Labour administration which runs the authority of breaking its promise to pay out the cash this year, after noticing that £1.9 million of money set aside for it remained unspent.

Tory leader, Councillor Glen Miller said: “It’s quite shameful of Labour to pull out from a promise made to the Council’s lowest paid workers, especially when there’s enough in this year’s budget to meet the cost.”

But the Labour group responded by saying it was made clear at the time that it would only be paid out if workers did not get a national pay rise - and this year they had.

Council leader, Councillor David Green, said: “Coun Miller is either demonstrating that he doesn’t understand what is happening in the Council or he’s being politically devious.”
