Members of Bradford Air Cadets were joined by the Lord Mayor of Bradford for a celebration of the group’s 75th anniversary.

Councillor Khadim Hussain visited the group’s Belle Vue Barracks in Manningham, Bradford, to meet young people and learn more about the squadron’s history.

The Bradford 44F squadron was the 44th to be established in the Air Training Corp and is a founder squadron, which means it carries an ‘F’ in its name.

It is the senior squadron in the South and West Yorkshire area and is now the last recognised founder squadron in the region.

Cadet Sergeant Hamza Hussain, a member of the group, which was established on January 21, 1939, said: “The fact we are a founder squadron makes the celebration of our 75th year even more special.

“The evening was a chance for cadets and their parents to mark the anniversary with the Lord Mayor of Bradford.”

There will be a second event held for former members of the group later in the year. Cadets, who are aged 13 to 18, take part in drills and activities at the barracks. They also have lessons on aviation and can fly aircraft.

Cadet Sergeant Hussain said the group hoped to boost its numbers during its 75th anniversary year by recruiting more members.

Bradford Air Cadets meet on Mondays and Fridays between 7pm and 9pm.
