The owner of a bookshop who turned to social media when sales were tumbling says the boost that followed has continued – and even spread to other independent businesses across the country.
David Ford posted a message on Facebook earlier this month saying he was making an “urgent appeal” for support after a week of dismal takings. The previous day he had taken £7.50 – leaving him out of pocket after the cost of the book and heating was considered – and the day before that sales totalled £13.
Mr Ford asked people to spread the word and support Saltaire Bookshop, as he looked for a second job to supplement his income.
On January 11, the day after his plea, takings increased to £300.
Yesterday, Mr Ford, who also heads up Saltaire Traders’ Association, said: “It’s certainly a lot busier and there has been a lot more interest.”
Mr Ford said he hoped “one or two” people would ‘like’ his Facebook post and was amazed when it went viral and was featured in the national media.
“Other bookshops are finding there’s a bit of a boost as well. People have been going in saying they’re determined to support their local bookshop and have quoted me,” he said.
