A new partnership to give tenants and landlords a fair deal in the private sector has been hailed by Keighley’s MP.

Housing minister Kris Hopkins hosted a summit at 10 Downing Street, where he met leading lenders offering buy-to-let mortgages to private landlords.

The lenders have agreed to work with the Government to tackle barriers to giving tenants longer, “family-friendly” tenancies.

The Government says it is taking steps to strengthen the private rented sector.

These include compulsory redress schemes for letting agents, and developing a draft tenants’ charter and model tenancy agreement.

The Government is also investing £1 billion through a Build to Rent fund and £10 billion in guarantees to deliver new homes for private rent.

Mr Hopkins said: “With 3.8 million households renting in the private rented sector, I want to be sure we take every step to give them the confidence to rent knowing they’ll get a fair deal.

“I’m really pleased that leading lenders have agreed to work with us to see how we can tackle the barriers that prevent people from getting the deal they want.”
