Shoppers at two Bradford supermarkets can boost the Telegraph & Argus Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal during bag-packing events this weekend.

Students from the University of Bradford will be at the checkouts ready to help customers fill their shopping bags at Asda Cemetery Road and Asda Keighley – in return for a donation to our £1 million fundraising bid.

Volunteers from the university’s sports clubs and societies, who are supporting the charity as part of their Raising and Giving (RAG) week, will also be wearing purple T&A Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal T-shirts to raise awareness of the cancer-fighting campaign.

The proceeds of both events will go towards buying a new mass spectrometer for the University’s Institute of Cancer Therapeutics, which will allow scientists to study the role of proteins in cancer ten times faster than ever before.

It is hoped the high-tech machine will help them develop new, less toxic cancer treatments to help transform the lives of sufferers around the world.

The appeal is being run in conjunction with the University, the Yorkshire Cancer Research charity and the Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust.

Ingrid Fernandes, community life colleague at Asda Cemetery Road, and Trudy Lund, of Asda Keighley, said they had been asked to get involved by Denise Taj, development officer at the University.

They said: “It was great to get together with Denise to help this cause. We are really pleased with what they are doing and this will help Bradford so much.

“We are glad to be a part of it.”

Students will be at Asda Cemetery Road from 11am to 5pm on Saturday and Asda Keighley from 11am to 5pm on Sunday.

The supermarket giant will also support the T&A Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal during a fair in the car park of the Asda Cemetery Road store, run with help from Asda Keighley, on Saturday, May 31.

Shoppers at the Cemetery Road store can also support the campaign during January and February by voting for the campaign with the green tokens they are given at the checkout.
