Members of young people’s groups across the district will gather at the National Media Museum in Bradford tomorrow to boost their ranks and recruit new volunteers.
The free event involving a number of organisations, working together under the Youth United umbrella, will offer arts activities, DJ sessions, first-aid workshops and a dance flashmob.
It is open to people up to the age of 25 who are interested in joining a youth group and anyone over 18 who is interested in finding out about volunteering.
Shagufta Sharif, Youth United development worker, said: “Youth United organisations change lives – we want to make those opportunities open to all young people, no matter what their background.
“Our network includes Girlguiding, St John Ambulance, The Scout Association, the Army Cadet Force, the Sea Cadets, the Boys’ Brigade, the Girls’ Brigade, the Volunteer Police, the Fire Cadets and the RAF Air Cadets.
“We hope people will come down and get involved on Saturday.”
One of the groups involved in organising the event is Girlguiding, which has seen 11 new units open across Bradford over the last 12 months.
Maryam Imran, 18, from the 1st Millan Rangers in Heaton, began volunteering after a group was set up in her area.
She said: “I would encourage anyone of thinking of volunteering to come to the National Media Museum on Saturday.
“Volunteering with guiding has really made a positive difference to my life. I love the fact that I can have so much fun, meet new people and really make a difference in the lives of young girls by volunteering.”
During the day, St John Ambulance will demonstrate first aid skills to inspire five to 17-year-olds to join its Badger and Cadet units.
Youth development officer Linda Clark said: “Seven out of ten pupils say they wouldn't know what to do if someone they knew was hurt.
“At our weekly meetings, youngsters learn skills that could save a life one day – while making friends and having fun.
“We believe every young person should have the chance to learn first aid.”
The event will run from noon until 4pm and anyone who attends will receive a free goodie bag.
