Restaurant manager Azhar Mahmood and his team of chefs have served up a New Year’s Day feast at a day shelter for the homeless in Bradford.
They cooked up enough food to feed more than 200 people at the Edmund Street shelter that has an open-door policy seven days a week.
Mr Mahmood said he hoped his gesture would stir other restaurants into action in 2014 encouraging them to make similar offers. He said: “There are hundreds of restaurants in Bradford who could follow suit and do a similar thing. If they just gave up one day in their year to feed a shelter then it would make such a massive difference.” Magda Dziurkowska, who manages the Horton Housing shelter, said: “For many of our clients to experience something different like this and to be served restaurant-quality food is very rare. We do the best we can on our budget to cook nutritious food but it can be a challenge.”
