Police are asking people to stay safe as they celebrate New Year’s Eve and know their drink limits.

Extra officers, including volunteers from the Special Constabulary, will be working.

Licensing officers have also been speaking with colleagues in the licensing trade and more workers will be on duty in the force control room to take the expected rise in calls.

Chief Superintendent Sue Day said: “New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest nights of the year for the emergency services. While the majority of people act responsibly and never need to contact us, there is a minority of people who drink far too much and spoil the fun for others.”

She said that not everyone can, or wants to party, until the early hours, so asked that people respect their neighbours and keep noise levels low.

“Finally don’t risk your future by drinking and driving, make sure you have arranged a taxi or lift home or appointed a designated driver. We will be out and about and hope that the only time we meet you is to wish you a happy New Year,” she added.
