A 37-year-old woman was over the drink-drive limit when she was stopped by police as she drove her friend home, a court heard.

Magdalena Panek was stopped by police in the early hours of December 6 in Keighley Road, Skipton, in a Fiat Punto.

A roadside breath test was positive and she was taken to the police station where she was found to have 51 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Panek, who was assisted in court by a Polish interpreter, and who admitted drink-driving, had drunk three cans of strong lager before attempting to drive her friend back to Ilkley, the court heard.

Married with four children and with a husband on JobSeekers Allowance, Panek, of Rushy Fall Meadow, Keighley, was in a very precarious situation, the court heard in mitigation.

Magistrates banned her from driving for 12 months and fined her £110 with costs of £60 and a victims’ surcharge of £20. If she completes a drink drivers’ rehabilitation course by July 19, 2014, her ban will be reduced by 13 weeks.
