A battered booklet discovered in the belongings of a bowler from the time of the Great War gives a fascinating insight into a series of Victorian cricket matches.
And it brings to light the story of the First World War soldier who might well have owed his life to a sporting injury.
The booklet details a series of charity fundraising matches between Guiseley and Calverley between 1872 and 1883.
The small piece of history belongs to 82-year-old Rex Eastwood, who discovered it in the papers of his father Herbert – a fast bowler for Horsforth during and after the Great War, who survived thanks in large part to breaking his leg.
Rex is now planning to donate it to a historical society.
