The Christmas wishes of Saltaire folk came true with the early end of major roadwork improvements and a new smoother traffic system in place for the New Year.

All the traffic light systems and structural changes have finished with only minor adjustments and cosmetic work still to take place.

And that is on target to be done by January 20, say Bradford Council highways officers.

“Traffic seems to be flowing a lot better – and it’s certainly a lot easier to cross the road outside our shops,” said Matt Coxon of Cheese & Chutney.

“You don’t have to just close your eyes and hope for the best anymore.”

Saltaire Traders’ Association chairman David Ford, who runs Saltaire Bookshop, agreed that traffic was moving better.

“That’s a positive thing, but there is no doubt the roadworks hit pre-Christmas trade – that’s the message on the street,” he said.

“But at least it’s finished and we’re keen for all the last bollards to be moved away. It’s also smartened up the area which looks somehow more professional.

“Now we want to welcome shoppers back to Saltaire and to a great new shopping experience.”

Rob Martin, a member of the Saltaire Village Society, said he was impressed by the changes.

“It’s very good and although there was disruption, it was well-managed. There are still some trees, planters and paving to go in, then it’s all done,” he said.

But Saltaire Women’s Institute chairman Fiz Pimperton sounded one note of criticism regarding the new pedestrian crossings: “As you head down to Saltaire Primary, it can take a long time to get across the roads because of the new set-up. And it does seem drivers are putting their foot down to get through the green lights.”

Councillor Martin Love (Green, Shipley) said generally he had heard very favourable comments.

“There is some tweaking to be done, such as the crossing where the island fills up at busy school times and there’s not enough room for everyone at once, but that will be sorted out along with other minor things.

“I’d really like to praise the traders for their patience and hopefully they and everyone will reap the reward of a much more attractive area.”

A Bradford Council Highways spokesman said all major works have been completed and the entire project was on schedule for completion by January 20.
