Maverick choreographer Matthew Bourne’s new production of Lord Of The Flies comes to Bradford’s Alhambra theatre late next year.
The show transfers William Golding's novel from a deserted island to a deserted theatre, where a group of abandoned schoolboys create their own community, leading to a breakdown of order and an “electrifying climax”.
But first, next March, comes Swan Lake, Bourne’s powerful, provocative interpretation of the classic ballet.
Anyone who has seen an angry swan, hissing and flapping to protect a nesting mate, will know that, despite their grace, swans are far from fragile. That was Matthew’s thinking when he replaced the female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble, barefoot in feather britches.
It raised eyebrows when first performed in 1995, but has since become one of the world's most popular shows.
Set to Tchaikovsky’s score, it combines Bourne’s trademark humour with stylish choreography.
Swan Lake runs at the Alhambra from March 4 to 8. Call (01274) 432000 for tickets.
