A carol service at Bradford Cathedral last night was a big colourful occasion at which readings were given by both the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Khadim Hussain, and Bradford Council’s chief executive Tony Reeves.
Councillor Hussain read from the Prophet Isaiah. Mr Reeves read from the Gospel of St Luke.
Classic carols rang out in the cathedral, including Once in Royal David’s City, O Little Town of Bethlehem, While Shepherds Watch Their Flocks By Night and O Come All Ye Faithful.
There was a special rendition of Away in a Manger for solo cornet played by Rob Westacott.
The Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Joanne Dodds, read from the Gospel of St John. Bradford Council’s executive member for Employment, Skills and Culture, Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, read from the Gospel of St Luke.
The City of Bradford Brass band, directed by Lee Skipsey, accompanied the Cathedral Choir which was directed by the Cathedral’s assistant director of music, Jonathan Eyre.
The Cathedral’s director of music, Alex Woodrow, played the organ. The congregation was welcomed by the Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Acting Dean of the Cathedral.
Prayers were led by the Reverend Canon Sam Corley.
The Bishop of Bradford, the Right Reverend Nick Baines, gave the address.
A collection was be taken to cover the cost of the service and to support the Lord Mayor's Appeal, Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure.
