A park is set to have its children’s play area transformed with £50,000, thanks to the tireless efforts of a campaign group.

Friends of Horton Park have worked with Bradford Council to secure funding for a new playground for older children.

The scheme will involve the installation of new equipment, all of which has been chosen by children to complement the existing toddler play area.

Nabbil Khan, chairman of the Friends of Horton Park Group, said the project was the first step in a redevelopment project for the park, which may also extend to restoring the pond area and sports facilities.

“We wanted to create something new and exciting that was on the doorstep for our children,” he said. “We have worked day and night on this project, and I’m really chuffed that we’ve got the go-ahead. It will have a massive impact on the area.”

The contract for the playground scheme will be awarded in early 2014, and work is expected to start in the spring.

Councillor Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Leisure, said: “These improvements were put together in consultation with local school children, park users and the wider community. They will provide youngsters with a fun and safe environment in which to play for many years to come.”

The group secured £50,000 for the redevelopment from WREN, a not-for-profit business which awards grants to community, environment and heritage projects across the UK.

WREN’s Landfill Communities Fund, which receives donations from waste and resource management company, FCC Environment, awarded £681,500 to 19 community projects across Yorkshire and the Humber this year, including four in the Bradford district.
