Students at Holy Family Catholic School, in Keighley, braved wintry conditions to carry out a ‘Big Tidy Up’ in their school grounds.

The 50 pupils from years seven to 11 volunteered to spend an hour cleaning up indoors and outdoors on Thursday.

Assistant head teacher Eileen Llewellyn said: “It’s the first time we’ve done this but we might make it a termly event.

“We’re collecting the rubbish so that it can be recycled, so this should be as environmentally friendly as possible. The tidy-up has been led by the junior leadership team, who are pupil representatives from each year group.

“It was very successful despite the rain and the cold. It was about raising awareness of the fact that litter is a problem in school and out in the community.”

She added that although the students had volunteered without expecting a reward, they were all given chocolate at the end.
