A motorcyclist has died after getting trapped under a car following a collision in Bradford.
The male rider, believed to be aged in his mid-50s, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Canal Road in Frizinghall.
His blue Yamaha bike was in collision with a red Kia Picanto at Canal Road’s junction with Frizinghall Road, near a traffic island.
It happened at about 4.50pm yesterday.
No other vehicles were involved, said police.
The man was trapped underneath the Picanto.
His bike was badly damaged.
A man at the scene said he believed the Picanto had been travelling away from Shipley and was turning right into Frizinghall Road, at the time of collision.
He said he thought the bike was travelling along Canal Road in the direction of Shipley.
He said that up to 12 emergency services vehicles were dealing with the incident at one point.
A motorist near the scene described “gridlock” in a Tweet and added that it was a “nasty crash”. Fire crews from Bradford and Idle stations were called to the scene.
They used specialist lifting equipment to get the car off the motorcyclist.
A spokesman for Idle fire station said: “We got a report of a motorcyclist trapped under a car, which proved to be the case.
“The ambulance first responders were in attendance, but they couldn’t get to the man because of where he was.
“We used our equipment to lift the car off him and left it to the ambulance crew.
“The motorcyclist was wearing all the protective gear, so he was obviously an experienced rider.”
Police urged motorists to avoid the area because they closed Canal Road in both directions, causing queuing traffic and delays for motorists heading between Bradford and Shipley.
As a result of the closure, nearby roads – including Shipley Airedale Road, Queen’s Road, Airevalley Road, Manningham Lane and Leeds Road – experienced heavy congestion and delays.
A police spokesman said the man was likely to be identified today.
