A man has been fined £500 after not clearing up after his dog in a public park.

Jonathan Wilson, of Brighouse, has been prosecuted for failing to pick up dog mess on two occasions in Bramston Street Recreation Ground, Rastrick.

Calderdale Council’s dog warden witnessed the offences and served Wilson with a fine of £80 each time, but he refused to pay the fines. He also refused to give his details to the warden, and later provided false details.

One of the dog fouling offences happened in an area where children play, the authority said.

At Halifax Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday, Wilson was found guilty of four offences – two for dog fouling, one for failing to provide his details and one for giving false details.

He was fined £500 and he also has to pay court costs of £500 and a victim surcharge of £50.

The Council’s cabinet member for economy and environment, Councillor Barry Collins, said: “Residents and visitors deserve a clean and safe borough, and we’ll continue to tackle the problem of dog fouling.

“The vast majority of dog owners take a responsible approach, but to those who don’t, we’re sending out a clear message: pick up or pay up.”
