A major fire in a waste processing plant is expected to cause diversions for anyone wanting to offload waste or recycling in the Spen Valley and Dewsbury areas.
A fire at the Household Waste and Recycling Centre on Weaving Lane in Dewsbury, which started shortly after 7pm yesterday, led to a two storey waste storage building at the centre becoming engulfed in flames.
Fire crews from Dewsbury, Mirfield, Cleckheaton, Hunslet and Ossett and an aerial appliance from Huddersfield fought through the night to put out the blaze.
And this morning the centre remains closed.
A statement from Kirklees Council this morning said: “A fire at the SITA waste transfer station in Dewsbury has meant that the household waste and recycling centre at Weaving Lane has been closed to the public.
“People wishing to use an alternative site may visit Nab Lane in Birstall or the site at Emerald Street Huddersfield.”
