The Muslim Women’s Council is reaching out to help the hungry and homeless by offering free curry and drinks every Thursday evening at the Carlisle Business Centre, Manningham.

Speaking at the launch of the multi-faith Curry Circle initiative, MWC founder Bana Gora said that there was a rising need for such schemes.

“We are seeing food banks on every housing estate due to increased poverty and then there is the other issue of homelessness.

“Homelessness can cause a spiral of decline for those individuals if they are not supported,” said Miss Gora.

“Unfortunately we are seeing an increase in the number of projects serving people living on the poverty line. This is of great concern that our neighbours are going hungry in the 21st century.”

Dozens of people in need of a meal called into the centre on Carlisle Road on its first night, but Miss Gora believes that number could easily reach the hundreds.

“What we’re seeing across Bradford are hungry individuals queuing up for free food – this is a stark contrast to the number of people forming a queue for the latest games console,” she said.

MWC is now asking restaurants and faith groups to donate food on a three monthly rota.

And some of those already offering support include Aziz Catering, My Lahore Cafe, The Sikh community, the Hindu Temple and the Council for Mosques.

The Muslim Women’s Council is a help organisation made up of women from all Islamic backgrounds.
