Strong winds battered Bradford today, leaving a trail of damage across the district and causing havoc on roads.

Firefighters in West Yorkshire have received nearly 200 wind-related calls today, including dangerous structures, fallen trees and trampolines lifted by the wind.

Station Road, in Steeton, had to be closed after a tree came crashing down.

And police also closed off Undercliffe Road at the junction with Otley Road, in Bradford, at about 2pm today after a sheet of steel fencing about 18ft wide and 10ft high was torn from its fixings and landed in the road.

A driver managed to pin it down by driving his 4x4 on top of it.

Meanwhile, part of a roof from a building was blown in to the yard of Belmont Business Centre in Burnett Street, Little Germany. Lee Meadowcroft, who was working there, said luckily no one had been in its way when it landed but: "It scared the pants off us!"

In Keighley, Town Hall Square was closed off as one of the flagpoles had bent over in the high winds.

Meanwhile,  loose cladding on the roof of Asda Keighley led to part of the car park being closed for safety reasons.

Earlier, a tree fell on the rail track near Apperley Lane at about 9am suspending all services between Leeds and Ilkley, said Northern Rail.

A trampoline, six foot in diameter, obstructed traffic flow for a while after it blew in to a junction at Toller Lane, Bradford, and had to be removed, said police.

Toller Lane was later closed both ways due to a fallen tree at Leylands Lane, and there are reports that Allerton Lane, Allerton, is partly blocked for the same reason.

Other fallen trees were reported in Brackenley Lane, Embsay, Raikes Road near the cemetery in Skipton and in Grassington Road, Skipton stopping traffic from passing.

This morning, vehicles struggled to pass a large fir tree which blew down in high winds across Cowpasture Road in Ilkley.

The tree fell from the grounds of the Craiglands Hotel, close to the entrance to Ilkley Grammar School.

Many drivers turned back, and heavy goods vehicles were among those trying to inch their way past the fallen tree.
 

In Sutton-in-Craven a tree across Sutton Lane was causing problems and another runaway trampoline was causing havoc on a road in the village.

Strong gusts were also disrupting flights at Leeds Bradford Airport, among those that had to be cancelled were a Flybe service to Southampton, a BA flight to Heathrow and a KLM flight to Amsterdam.

A spokesman for British Airways said: "We are doing all we can to help customers and will rebook them on to later flights. We will also look to use larger aircraft to help fly delayed customers later in the day."

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it had experienced a flood of wind-related calls today.
Between 07.30am and 3pm, the county's fire service received 186 calls, 80 of which involved dangerous structures such as chimney stacks, roof cladding or signs.
WYFRS was also called to a number of incidents involving fallen trees and trampolines lifted by the wind.
Ian Bitcon, Area Manager for Fire Safety, said: “We have had an extremely busy day today. However, crews have dealt professionally with these incidents and had the necessary resources to do so.
"Fortunately, there has been no serious injury as a result of today’s weather.”
The Met Office today issued a Yellow Warning for ice between 3pm today and midday tomorrow.
Mr Bitcon added: “Given that we may well have icy weather on the way we urge the public to take extra care at home and on the road as the winter snap sets in.”
