Bradford Council says it will monitor the impact of a neighbouring Council’s scheme to introduce 20mph limits in all residential areas.

People in Calderdale are being asked what they think about Council plans to introduce a blanket 20mph restriction in residential areas across the borough.

A series of drop-in sessions are being organised across Calderdale, with a session due to take place in Brighouse Civic Hall on Wednesday, December 4, between 3pm and 7pm.

Calderdale Council wants to know which of three proposals residents would prefer – either to continue introducing two or more schemes each year in specific areas of Calderdale; to introduce 20mph speed limits outside all schools or to introduce 20mph speed limits in all residential areas.

The council’s cabinet has said its preferred option would be to introduce 20mph speed limits in all residential areas because it would be safer for all road users and encourage more people to walk, run and cycle.

Councillors in Bradford are keeping a close eye on the situation.

Councillor Val Slater, Bradford Council’s executive member for housing, planning and transport, said: “This issue has been raised with Bradford Council in the past and we did not consider it appropriate to introduce a blanket reduction across our roads.

“However, we are aware of Calderdale’s proposals and we will take the opportunity to evaluate their scheme once it is up and running.”

Calderdale’s cabinet member for economy and environment, Coun Barry Collins, said: “Residents have expressed their concerns with speeding across Calderdale and introducing 20mph speed limits should help slow traffic down to reduce the number of casualties occurring on our roads. I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage as many people as possible to let us know their views.”

Carol Whittingham, who started Brighouse-based charity Scard in 1993 a year after her son Steven was killed by a drink-driver, said she though the 20mph limit on all residential roads was a brilliant idea.

She said: “I wish more Councils would grasp the metal and do the same. It’s high time more was done to stop the slaughter on our roads. It will save lives. I’m just surprised seeing as I live in Brighouse and run an organisation like this that I’ve not heard anything about the Brighouse meeting or been approached we could have had some input.

“However, I hope people will go along and support 20mph limits in all residential areas.”

People can also go calderdale.gov.uk/transport to make their views known by Friday, January 31.
