People in Shipley are being asked to help make the area more welcoming to dementia sufferers as part of a scheme by the Alzheimer’s Society.
The charity hopes to work with 20 communities over two years to raise awareness of the issues people with the condition face on a daily basis.
It is estimated there are more than 6,000 people in the district with dementia, but only 55 per cent of those will have been diagnosed.
On Wednesday, Shipley Area Committee will discuss a report on the Bradford Dementia Friendly Communities Project, which is led by the Alzheimer’s Society and funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Bradford Council. It details work ongoing in other parts of the district and what can be done to help people in Shipley.
The charity’s Dementia Friendly Communities Co-ordinator Cathy Henwood said simple steps could make a big difference. “It can be things like shops and businesses showing consideration if someone is struggling with change,” she said.
The committee meets on Wednesday at 6pm at Wilsden Village Hall.
