A primary school near Keighley is celebrating after scooping a lottery grant of £50,000 to set up a brass band.
The ‘Sutton’s Got Brass’ project, spearheaded by Sutton-in-Craven Community Primary School, secured the £49,990 Big Lottery Fund grant after a head-to-head in The People’s Millions on ITV Yorkshire North.
The school fought off competition from Ryedale Folk Museum and can now move ahead with its vision of creating a community brass band.
The band will be based at the school, but membership will be open to the community as well as pupils.
Dawn Austwick, chief executive of the Big Lottery Fund, said: “This is a brilliant result for the people of Sutton-in-Craven and shows what groups can achieve when they have the support of their community behind them.”
Head teacher Fiona Beetles said: “Brass playing is part of the musical heritage of our area and we want local children and their families to have the opportunity to play in a community brass band based in our village.”
A total of 15 staff members and all the children in year four are learning a brass instrument and many of the youngsters spoke about their enthusiasm for getting the chance to become part of a brass band.
Pupil Alice Horner said: “I feel really proud that I am playing a brass instrument because not everyone gets this amazing opportunity.”
The People’s Millions public vote determined which deserving cause would win the contest. This week, projects have been going head-to-head on ITV Yorkshire North evening news pitching for a life-changing grant.
The contest continues tonight when Creative Flare Inspiring Fashion, based in Bradford, will be pitched against Better Leeds Communities’ project Up Our Street in the final head-to-head of the series.
