Bradford hospitals’ principal dietician Clare Gelder has been manning the new Good Food Advice stall at Bradford’s Oastler Shopping Centre in an effort to raise awareness of healthy eating.
Mrs Gelder, along with student dieticians Amy Butterworth and Mike Sweeney, from Leeds Metropolitan University, spent an afternoon talking to the public and stallholders about the importance of good food and healthy lifestyles.
Mrs Gelder said: “The Good Food Stall gives us the perfect opportunity to go out into the community to challenge people and make them think about the food they eat.
“It also gives us the chance to raise awareness that by making small changes, such as reducing fat and increasing fruit and vegetables, they can make big changes to their diet.
“We were also able to offer support to those people who had concerns about such conditions like osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency and we signposted people to other health partners across the district who could help make a difference to people’s wellbeing, in areas such as exercise, physical activity and mental health and wellbeing.”
The stall, which is being run by Bradford Council, will be at the market for at least another 15 months and was set up as a reaction to figures that showed fewer than a quarter of people in Bradford eat healthily.
It is just metres from fruit and veg stalls – so people can get started on their healthier diets.
