A teacher who devotes much of his free time to helping his pupils prepare for life post school has been nominated for a Telegraph & Argus Schools Award.
Derek Radcliffe, who has taught at Grange Technology College for 34 years, has been nominated for Secondary School Teacher of the Year.
Mr Radcliffe, 55, is director of post 16 studies at the school as well as being a PE teacher. One of his pupils, Nimra Khan, nominated him for his work helping pupils prepare CVs, UCAS forms and personal statements.
In her nomination she said: “He is an inspiration to students as he is determined every single day. Students like me feel that we can talk to him about anything as he is very understanding and approachable.
“One hour every week he takes the time to give a presentation on what the sixth form students should be doing in order to ensure that we meet our academic target. He will stay back hours after school to ensure that no student has a problem with their personal statement and this shows that he is determined to help students.
“He has been at Grange Technology College for many years now and this shows that he is determined to do his job, and without him the school wouldn’t be the same. In my opinion his hard work and commitment has inspired me and many other students.”
Mr Radcliffe, of Bingley, said: “Every teacher should be in it for the kids. I just try to help them the best I can. I have always had an open door policy and make sure we listen to what the students say and try to help them.
“I’m overwhelmed to have been nominated. It is a pleasure to work with the pupils here and when you see them go on to higher education or otherwise it makes it all worthwhile. The influence a teacher can have is huge, so you have to be careful to give students the right advice. I’ve been here since 1979 and I still get a buzz every day out of teaching here.”
