A Bradford firm has apologised and has started an investigation after a customer bought a “fresh” cheesecake that had “green mould” inside it and smelled of “rotten eggs”.
Shazad Hussain said the cake was bought as a treat for his 12-year-old daughter Sanna, who was having a family party at home to celebrate some exam results.
It was served to nine children before any of the adults at the party on Charteris Road, Lower Grange, realised something was wrong, said Mr Hussain.
Pakeezah, the firm that owns Food2Go on Manningham Lane where the cake was bought, has said it is investigating. A spokesman said the cake was provided by an external supplier.
Mr Hussain, who claimed there was no sell-by-date on the cake’s box, said: “The adults got it and it stank. By then the kids had eaten a few spoonfuls. It really made me feel sick.
“It smelled like eggs when they have gone really off. It smelled rotten. It was supposed to be fresh.
“It destroyed a lovely party that my daughter was having. She was upset.”
Mr Hussain said his three-year-old niece Maeesha suffered from vomiting and diarrhoea throughout the night after eating some of the cheesecake.
The Food2Go outlet is Pakeezah’s replacement for their Ingleby Road supermarket that was destroyed by fire in July.
A spokesman for the company said following a check of invoices, it appeared the cake had been with the firm for two days. He said they should have a shelf-life of seven days.
“We want to apologise to the customer,” said the spokesman.
“Obviously this should not have happened. We are investigating further with the supplier and within our business.
“It is a real shame that this has happened. I can understand the customer’s viewpoint. I would not like to be in his shoes. I can understand his point of view. I am disgusted.
“We will find out how come it has happened. This has never happened before.”
Mr Hussain said he rang Bradford Council’s environmental health department to complain. A spokesman for the Council confirmed they were investigating the matter.
