Giant outdoor art installations portraying racing cyclists will be displayed around Keighley for the Tour de France, if a local enthusiast’s scheme gets the go-ahead.
Frank O’Dwyer, of Black Hill, wants to use at least five of these eye-catching creations to decorate next July’s Tour route through the town. He came up with the idea for the land art initiative, which he has dubbed Project Spartacus reflecting the gladiatorial nature of the Tour de France and in tribute to Tour Swiss cyclist Fabian Cancellara is nicknamed Spartacus.
“These figures would be visible to helicopters flying over the race, and would also be seen on TV screens worldwide to ensure Keighley is not overlooked,” he said.
“This has educational benefits as the aim is to have Keighley Campus Leeds City College and schools involved in the painting and construction of the figures.
“I’m looking for permission to site the figures on two Keighley roundabouts, school yards and outside Cliffe Castle.”
Mr O’Dwyer said each figure would be about 19 feet wide and 16 feet high and businesses had already come forward to sponsor them.
