A disabled woman says her “freedom” has been stolen after her mobility scooter was stolen from outside her house in Bradford.

Katrina Green has been in tears since the £700 machine was taken from her doorstep on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old, who suffers from muscle disease myalgia, sciatica, arthritis and mental health issues, lives on Frank Street, Great Horton, with her fiance and carer Robert Buckingham.

Mr Buckingham, who suffers from ill-health himself, said: “She has been crying a lot since it happened. She said they have taken her freedom away. She is really upset.

“I just don’t know how they can live with themselves, taking something that is for a disabled person. How nasty are they?”

Mr Buckingham said his fiancee could only walk “very short distances” and sometimes used a walking frame.

He said: “She has got to go up the stairs at home on her knees to get to bed or the toilet.

“She comes downstairs on her backside.”

The theft happened at 9.45am, no more than five minutes after Mr Buckingham had placed the scooter outside while he and Miss Green got ready to go out.

“It was parked outside,” said Mr Buckingham, 40. “I did her breakfast, then looked out of the window and it was gone.

“We only bought it a few months ago – we saved up for it and it cost more than £700.”

The couple, who rely on benefits, want anyone who knows who stole the red scooter, or where it is now, to come forward.

Mr Buckingham said he has started putting money aside to buy a new scooter, and appealed to anyone who could help them finance another one.

A police spokesman confirmed the theft had happened and that enquiries were ongoing. Anyone with any information on the theft, or where the scooter is, can ring police on 101.
