THE PRODUCERS at The Alhambra
What do you get when you pair a down-on-his-luck producer, a naive accountant and an eye-wateringly tasteless show that’s bound to have ’em leaving the theatre in droves.
You get a roaring success, much to the dismay of Broadway schemers Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, whose hapless tale is brought to the stage hilariously by the Bradford Catholic Players.
Bialystock and Bloom’s plan to to make thousands from backers for their ‘flop’ of a show backfires in spectacular fashion, when it turns out Springtime for Hitler doesn’t quite have the anticipated effect.
This production, beautifully directed by David Kirk, did Mel Brooks’ romp proud; blending fast-paced comedy and Jaqui Drake’s dazzling choreography in a production that could rival anything on Broadway.
Well done to a fabulous cast, headed by Nicholas Carroll as uncouth chancer Max Bialystock, whose morals are as loose as his shirt tails, and Michael Riley as wide-eyed nerd Leo Bloom.
Great performances too from the excellent Anna Clarke as Swedish ‘assistant’ Ulla, Simon Carroll as wonderfully mad Franz Liebkind, and Simon Field and Ian Mottram, camping it up delightfully.
A must-see comedy to warm up chilly November nights.
Runs until Saturday.
