A campaign aimed at stopping the closure of the public toilets in Haworth Park has received support from Keighley’s MP.

Bradford Council has revealed proposals to shut the facilities to try and save money, arguing that it needs to make difficult decisions in order to balance its budget.

But Kris Hopkins – who represented the Worth Valley ward as a councillor for 12 years – said the plan to axe the toilets was short-sighted and politically-motivated.

He said: “I’m dismayed but not in the least bit surprised by this decision taken by a band of Labour councillors with little or no concern for residents living outside that party’s political heartlands.

“The toilets in Central Park are new, modern and well-used by local people and the many thousands of tourists who frequent Haworth each year.

“The tourist numbers are set to multiply many times next year when the Tour de France comes to the village.

“I note the relevant Labour executive member in Bradford City Hall says the council plans to encourage businesses to open their toilets to public use.

“This is not fair on the businesses concerned. It is not their job, and it will not work.

“If the council does not want to retain responsibility for these toilets, they should transfer ownership to the local parish council and let them get on with running them.”
