People have been taking the chance to pay tribute to someone special in their lives by making nominations for the 2013 Telegraph & Argus Christmas Star Appeal.
Hundreds of stars will be hung on the City Hall Christmas Tree to remember absent loved ones and celebrate those who have made a unique contribution during the year.
Proceeds will go to the Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Khadim Hussain’s Appeal, which this year is supporting Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure.
Glenda Pickford, 66, of Summerbridge Crescent, Eccleshill, Bradford, has sent two stars in this year, the second of which is for her husband of 46 years, Brian, who died in August.
“You think about your family every day, not just at Christmas,” she said. “But this is a very fitting tribute and its nice to be able to give the charities a little help as well.”
Glenda and Brian, who was a regular contributor to the T&A letters page and Remember When? sections, had previously sent in a star every year since 2003 for their daughter, Diane McDermott.
“Brian always instigated the appeal in our house, but it’s something that I want to carry on,” said Glenda. “I hope the campaign is always there because the event really brings people together. I’ll certainly keep going for as long as I can, and I know that Brian will be there in spirit this year.”
To nominate a loved one for a star, fill in the coupon on this page, and send a cheque or postal order for £5, made payable to 'The Lord Mayor's Appeal’, to: Christmas Star, Lord Mayor's Appeal. City Hall, Bradford, BD1 1HY. Alternatively, you can call (01274) 434965 from Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, to pay by credit or debit card.
The closing date for nominations is this Friday.
You will then be invited to the Banqueting Suite at City Hall on Tuesday, December 3, for refreshments and a mince pie with the Lord Mayor to see your Christmas Star on the City Hall tree.
A full list of all nominated Christmas Stars will be published in the T&A following the ceremony.
