Volunteers who run Denholme’s community library marked two years of success with a slice of celebration cake yesterday.
Established to offer not just books, but to be a focal point for the town, co-ordinator Annette Bell said the library in the Mechanics’ Hall was now an essential part of life for many Denholme folk.
“At least 20 people a day come through the door and it really is a case of from the cradle to the grave,” said retired council worker Mrs Bell. “We have a new scheme of giving first books to children as young as six months, while at the same time elderly people from nearby residential homes use the library as a place to meet, get a book and have a chat.
“But above all, a book is a friend you can trust.
“We have a really strong team of people working here and we’re getting stronger all the time,” Mrs Bell told a group of wellwishers.
Denholme Mayor Steve Nunn said the library had proved to be a great asset for the town.
