War memorials across Calderdale are being cleaned and repaired in a major new restoration project.
Calderdale Council is working with the War Memorials Trust, a conservation charity, to spruce up every memorial in Calderdale in time for the centenary of the end of the First World War in 2018.
Monuments at Rastrick Library garden, Norwood Green village green, Shelf memorial garden, Southowram and Brighouse’s Rydings Park are among those getting restored.
Work has started on some of the smaller sites, before the larger projects are worked on with the assistance of War Memorials Trust grants.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet member for communities, Councillor Steve Sweeney, said: “It’s really important that war memorials are kept in a good state of repair, and are a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives fighting for their country.
“This work will be completed to a high standard, ensuring that we can be proud of these monuments for many years to come.”
