Bradford’s poorest families will continue to pay at least a quarter of their Council Tax bills, it has been decided.
Before April, some disadvantaged people were exempt from paying Council Tax as it was covered by the national Council Tax Benefit.
But this benefit has been axed and replaced by the Council Tax Reduction, which is instead run locally by councils.
In Bradford, it means working-age people have to pay a minimum of 25 per cent of their bill. This figure will continue into 2014-15, the executive decided yesterday.
Bradford Council leader David Green said the authority simply couldn’t afford to pay out “another £1.5 million to £2.5 million” to offer people more of a subsidy.
